The Tigers had a strong showing from both the men and women’s track teams as they ran through the competition in a meet held on Feb. 29 at Riverside City College. From the field events to the sprinters and long distance runners, Riverside track and field dominated both Golden West and Saddleback, getting first, second, and third in most of the dual meet’s events.
The meet started off with the field events, and like the rest of the meet, Riverside was dominant. Alston Elmore won the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 11 inches. He also launched the discus in a throw of 141 feet, 11 inches, which gave him a first place finish.
RCC took first and second in the high jump at 6 feet, 8 inches. Josh Como leaped an amazing 49 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump and Ennis Jones ran a time of 21.4 seconds in the 200 meters. Both are state leaders in their respective events. Duke Greer also had a strong showing for the men’s team, winning the 100 meter dash in an impressive time of 10.7 seconds. He was also part of the winning 400 meter and1600 meter relay.
“I would have run a better time but the weather was cold and it effected my time” said Greer. “I don’t think anyone can beat me the way I am running right now.”
The women’s team also fared well winning nearly every event. Moriah Jubrey won the 200 and was a part of the 1600 relay team that took first place.
“We looked very strong on both the men’s and women’s teams” said Coach Jim McCarron. “But our sprinters looked the best; we are in great shape for the season.”
Both teams are undefeated on the season and looking to win the state title. The men’s team is No.1 in the state while the women’s team is ranked No. 9.
Earlier this year, Riverside took on a challenge against Long Beach State, a division I program, in a non-scoring dual meet and took most of the events. The men’s team took No. 1 in the state after its impressive showing at the Cerritos invitational and hasn’t looked back.
The women’s team has been ranked No. 9 all season, but is looking to move up in the rankings after its win over Golden West and Saddleback.
