With a reduction in available classroom space due to the remodeling of the A. G. Paul Quadrangle, and the constantly increasing number of students who come to RCC, the administration and department heads designed a new schedule, which includes Fridays as a full school day, to make it easier for students to take classes consecutively, and to increase the number of classes available.

For instance, under the new schedule, a student can take many of his or her classes within a six-day school week, even while holding a full-time job. With classes going from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., there is a lot of room for adjustment to avoid scheduling conflicts.

The down side of this new schedule is that with classes all starting around the same times, the already bad parking situation here can only become worse. Fortunately, this problem should only be temporary, because in time more parking spaces will be on hand in the new parking structure at Magnolia and Terracina.

Another possible drawback is that with the increased workload, there will be less one-on-one time available between students and instructors, and with classes continuing until 10 p.m. at night, the instructors might eventually become just as sleepy in class as the students.

Regardless of the possible disadvantages, anyone who has had to linger in college waiting for the right class to open up should appreciate the new schedule. This is a community college, the next step after high school and many students do have to hold down jobs in addition to seeking higher education. Anything to lighten the load will give them more time for work, family, school… oh, and a life.
