“You know, I think it just got a little easier out here for a pimp,” said Jon Stewart, host of “The 78th Annual Academy Awards,” “By the way for those of you keeping track at home, Martin Scorsese: zero Oscars – Three 6 Mafia: one.”
As with most Oscar shows there were few surprises. If you watched the Golden Globes you pretty much knew who would take away a gold statuette on Oscar night. Clooney, Witherspoon, and Hoffman were all big winners as expected. What no one really anticipated was for hip hop group Three 6 Mafia to enter the annals of academy history.
“It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” from the movie “Hustle & Flow” was the second hip hop song to ever win an Oscar after Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” in 2002. Eminem did not show up to the 2002 Oscars so his song was never performed, making “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” the only hip hop song to ever be performed at the ceremonies.
In sharp contrast to the usually subdued acceptance speeches of most Oscar recipients, the music group enthusiastically gave “shout outs”, thanked Jesus and got bleeped as their diamond “grillz” gleamed in the spotlights.
“Why are they the most excited people here?” laughed Stewart.
So far there have been no reports of Three 6 Mafia “getting into it” with Itzhak Perlman’s “posse”, as Stewart forewarned. It’s likely they didn’t view the famous violinist as a threat to their turf.
