Former Riverside City College cross country runner Brandon Johnson set a new Distance Medley Relay record on the final day of the International Association of Athletics Federation World Relays championships held in Nassau, Bahamas on May 2nd and 3rd.

The USA team finished their relay in 9:15.50, topping Kenya’s previous record, set in 2006, by a mere .06 seconds. Johnson finished his 800-meter leg in 1:44.75 and ran with Kyle Merber, Ben Blankenship, and Brycen Spratling who ran the 1,200 in 2:53.56, 1,600 in 3:51.24 and 400 in 45.95, respectively.

“Brandon has so much potential,” said RCC track and field coach Jim McCarron. “He definitely has a shot at medaling at the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.” Johnson has earned a four year contract with Nike and is now training for the Olympics in Chula Vista.
