Halfway through its season, the women’s tennis team is off to a good start. With an overall record of 7-2, the team is confident as it heads into the final stretch of conference play. “We’re doing well with only two losses,” said coach Nikki Bonzoumet. “If we were in any other conference, I’m sure we’d win. We just have some really good teams in our conference.”March 10, the team suffered its second loss to Orange Coast, which is currently undefeated in conference play. The Tigers finished the first half of conference play March 17 against Fullerton. RCC had an easy win with a score of 8-1.Lauren Huxen started the singles competition winning 6-4, 6-4. Huxen is a sophomore this year who had to fight back from a series of injuries. She was recently out with an injury to her thumb where she had to get stitches. The sophomore also had nerve damage in her elbow. Despite these setbacks Huxen still played strong with hopes of playing for Point Loma Nazarene University in the future.The women continued to dominate against Fullerton, winning five out of its six single matches. Karissa Lentz, Lilly Cornejo and Joycelyn Holt all contributed points by winning their single matches.The Tigers also won two doubles matches 8-6, and 8-4.In tennis every individual win contributes one point to the overall score. Everyone is a factor to the wins. RCC is an overall strong team so a good finish to the season will be no surprise. “Every once in a while you have one star player, but this year we’re pretty close,” Bonzoumet said. “They’re all doing a great job.”The tigers next match is March 29 when they’ll face Saddleback for the second time.
