The RCC Tigers are swept by the MT. San Antonio Mounties in a 3-0 loss, falling to a record of 2-9.
The game started with Mt. San Antonio taking a 6-3 lead against the Tigers at the beginning, with the Mounties staying ahead in the first set. The Tigers stayed in the game until they took a 12-9 lead in the middle of the first set.
After a timeout, the Tigers returned to the court scoring more confidently, tying the game at 12-12 and eventually taking the lead at 17-16.
“We have a lot of freshmen playing on the court that just switched from a high school style of play. Moving into college, and sometimes you get a little frazzled under the pressure,” Assistant Coach Kyle Taylor said. “And that really helped us rattle off points later in the set.”
The rest of the first set would remain a competitive game, resulting in a 25-23 score for San Antonio.
The second set started with the Tigers scoring four unanswered points and remaining in the lead for the beginning of the set. However, the Mounties scored six unanswered points and continued to dominate the set. At one point, scoring seven unanswered points. The set would end with the Mounties winning 25-14.
With the Tigers down two sets. The room was filled with a sense of pressure. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the third set would seem to follow the same story as the second. The Mounties continued to lead the scoreboard with a score of 15-4.
“Maybe we just needed to stay longer in our huddles and talk,” Middle Blocker Jayden Franchere said.
The Tigers, however, rallied to catch up to the Mounties and stay competitive in the later part of the set. But unfortunately, they would lose the final set 25-20. Resulting in a 0-3 loss.
“We just reminded our girls we really have nothing to lose. We are already down two sets to nothing. Do we want to go home with 3-0, or do we want to leave with some confidence and really make a push for a win,” Taylor said.
Even though RCC failed to win the game, their third-set resurgence showed they have a lot of heart and have what it takes to win.
“I think this game showed us what we can be, and if we take that, we can win,” Outside Sitter Savannah Smith said.
The Tigers are now on a seven-game losing streak and look to turn things around at home against Santa Ana College on Sept.17.
