There is a saying that goes, “Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.”
Apparently, some Republican commentators have never heard that before.
At the recent White House Correspondent’s dinner, comedian Wanda Sykes spent about 15 minutes making fun of everything from President Obama’s shirtless photos to the first lady’s lack of sleeves.
However, it was when she got to the topic of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity that things really got interesting.
On Limbaugh’s recent comments she said, “Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails. So you’re saying I hope America fails…To me that’s treason. He’s not saying anything differently from what Osama Bin Laden is saying. You know you might want to look into this sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, he was just so strung out on OxyContin that he missed his flight.”
She was greeted with a mixture of laughter and boos from the crowd, to which she replied, “Too much.”
The next day the far right was up in arms.
Keep in mind, these are the same people who said anyone who disagreed with President Bush was a terrorist and who generally hate anyone whose views differ from theirs in the least bit.
For such a negative, hate-spewing bunch of people, they sure can’t take a joke.
Now there’s no doubt that there are some topics that are off limits, and 9/11 is one of them, but you can’t be on the radio every day calling your opponents every nasty name in the book and then get mad when somebody comes back at you by making you the butt of a few jokes.
Following her infamous hijacker comments, Sykes went on to say, “Rush Limbaugh hopes the country fails. I hope his kidneys fail.”
Limbaugh has been uncharacteristically quiet on the issue, but many of his minions have spoken up in his defense.
They’ve derided Sykes for wishing harm to Limbaugh and defended him by saying that he’s more creative than Sykes because she writes her material and he does three hours everyday off the top of his head.
Really! How creative could he be when he’s just using the same insults and hate speech everyday?
On Hannity’s FOX news talk show Dick Morris tried to claim that Limbaugh also never sinks to the level that Sykes did in her routine.
Limbaugh never sinks down to the gutter in his show, are they serious?
So when he says he hopes the president fails, that’s not gutter talk at all.
Hannity also questioned why Sykes didn’t make more jokes about Obama.
Did he miss the first 10 minutes of her routine where she got on the president about being too friendly, his iPod gift to the Queen of England and Joe Biden’s talkative nature?
She actually did more jokes about the president than anyone else.
Of course, Hannity and Limbaugh think they’re the center of the universe and probably couldn’t hear anything past their own names.
Sykes is known for her outrageous jokes and her no holds barred style, so it’s not like anyone should be surprised that she delivered a set that people can’t stop talking about.
All these people who are so up in arms about her calling out Limbaugh need to take a breath and realize it’s only a joke.
By the way, when you’re on TV and the radio everyday asking people to follow you and do what you say, you’ve made the decision to become a political figure.
This means you don’t get to pick and choose what people will say about you.
All one can do is develop a thick skin and try not to take themselves too seriously.
Unless you’re Limbaugh, then you might be too strung out on OxyContin to get the joke.
Whoops, just kidding, I hope he can take a joke.
