For the next 18 months the English, Speech Communication, Humanities Departments and Photo program will call the portables on Lovekin Field home.

Over summer break instructors in some disciplines were required to pack up their offices and move down to the portables. Facilities was kept busy during the summer, from setting up the Martin Luther King Jr. Teaching and Learning Center to moving the faculty down the hill.”Facilities were wonderful helping us move down here,” said Senior Instructional Department Specialist Alice Gray.

It was a strain on the instructors, not so much with the faculty who were teaching during the summer, but the others who had to come on their vacations. English and Speech Communication Department Chairman Tim Brown commented that the portables do not have the same college feel as the old A.G. Paul Quadrangle, but at least its not forever, only 18 months.

“I’m looking forward to the new Quad,” he said.

Not all classrooms will contain high technology equipment such as projectors and DVD players, but at least white boards which the instructors prefer to chalk, and better air conditioning.

Brown is also concerned about the bathroom facilities, fearing that they might be inadequate. With only two sets of bathrooms, men will have to deal with only two stalls and two urinals each, while women have only three stalls.

Parking will also be a major concern with the staff and students. Parking services is bracing for the impact of the start of term. They are anticipating the lower lots, lot E, Lot G, Lot L and Lot F to fill quickly. The course of action at that point is to shut down streets and direct traffic to other lots, such as Lot B and Evans Field.

Director of Parking Services Sgt. Richard Henry recommends students and faculty be prepared and arrive at school early”Invest in a good pair of walking shoes,” he said.
