At the break of morning light on April 28, March Field Air Reserve Base in Moreno Valley became the host for a unique structure, The Moving Wall.

Many know the wall as the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington D.C. The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of the memorial. It is in the shape of a “V” and placed at a 125 degree angle. It stands at 7 feet tall at its highest point and is 253 feet long from end to end.

The Moving Wall ceremony served as the open for the Thunder over the Empire Air Show that weekend.

The opening entertainment was a young musical group from Lake Arrowhead, The Mountain Fife and Drum Jr. Corps. It played an array of colonial tunes, including “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

The March Field Blue Eagles Honor Guard presented colors as the National Anthem was played. Concluding this portion of the ceremony was a fly-over of five Air Force WWII trainers in a Missing Man formation

Some Air Force personnel stood up to speak. Soon after, Master Sgt. Bob Carreon and Senior Airman Mario Gomez played “Taps” from opposite ends of the wall.

The Moving Wall has been touring the country since its first appearance in Tyler, Texas, in 1984.
