Halfway through its season, the women’s tennis team is off to a good start. With an overall record of 7-2, the team is confident as it heads into the final stretch of conference play. “We’re doing well with only two losses,” said coach Nikki Bonzoumet.
The Riverside Community College women’s tennis team (6-0) kept their record perfect in the sixth meet of the season with a win on March 1 against Cypress Community College (0-1) at RCC. The match was the first of the season for the Cypress team because its scheduled games in the last two weeks were canceled due to heavy rainfall.
The Riverside Community College men’s tennis team is off to a rough start, but is expected to do well this season. “I see us between second and fourth in conference depending on how matches fall,” Coach Tony Chatfield said. In its home match on Feb. 24 against Irvine Valley, RCC lost its third consecutive and second straight match in conference play.
Calling it his “golden handshake,” Bob Schermerhorn has no regrets about his opportunity to venture into the next part of his life, whatever that may be. As he explains it, his years here were never supposed to last this long. Already in the Hall of Fame for his coaching days at Arizona, he revels in the prospect of being an assistant to a younger coach and being able to dispense his wisdom to someone new.
