Benjamin Vargas, president of Associated Students of Norco College sat in the vacant Riverside Community College District student trustee seat at the Board of Trustees meeting March 17.
Recently resigned student trustee April Galvan from Norco College needed to be temporarily replaced, so Vargas who shares the same home college as Galvan was appointed to represent RCCD students at this meeting.
During his “first and only meeting as student trustee,” Vargas addressed the board members with the student report on behalf of the three schools of RCCD.
He admitted that he was nervous and thanked the board and all faculty and staff present for their dedication in serving RCCD’s students.
According to Vargas, he was initially going to turn the temporary position down due to employment responsibilities, but he was able work out an arrangement so that he could be present at this meeting.
A special election will be held for the position of student trustee for the 2015-2016 RCCD academic school year on April 7 and 8. This election will differ from the previous elections in that students will be able to cast their votes via Webadvisor.
Potential student trustee candidate Ryan Rudolph, current vice president of Associated Students of Riverside City College, was also present at the Board of Trustees meeting to collect some of his 250 required signatures of approval from the student body to be placed on the ballot for student trustee.
“I am running for student trustee because through my experience as vice president of ASRCC I grew to love public service and I want to expand my horizons,” said Rudolph.
