Cosmetology camp-out

Students gathered in tents, blankets, and lawn chairs as they waited for the 90 available spots in the upcoming night and day RCC Cosmetology program enrollment that was to take place Oct.3. Aimee Crawford, who had arrived the night before the line-up was to take place and who was first in line, said that she enjoyed being around people and enjoyed doing other people’s hair.

Board election sparks heated controversy

Riverside Community College faculty stands divided over the controversy of Board of Trustees candidate Mary Figueroa being the college’s convocation speaker and being endorsed by the faculty union. Figueroa spoke at the convocation ceremony Sept. 16, while she is up for re-election on Nov.

RCC to launch online class registration

The days of Riverside Community College’s telephone registration program “Tiger Talk” could be numbered. The college will be rolling out a new registration technique during this year’s winter session so that students will be able to register for classes online using the college’s Website.

‘Ladder 49’ turns up the heat

“What makes firefighters run into burning buildings while everyone else is running out?” This is the question posed by John Travolta, who plays Mike Kennedy, captain of Ladder 49, Engine 33. It almost impossible to watch this movie without reflecting upon a family member or a friend who is a hero underneath the yellow, fire-retardant coat and helmet or considering the heroics performed by the firefighters who gave their lives in the events of September 11, 2001.

Gym: Off limits

Today, 64 percent of Americans 20 years and older are overweight. This means that nearly two-thirds of the nation’s population suffers from the adverse effects of an unhealthy lifestyle. In other words, of the approximately 31,000 students at RCC 19,840 could be at greater risk for developing diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Tigers claw to No. 1 in state
