Art student holiday exhibit and sale

Teacher preparation and education programs Reading Winter Wonderland
It’s time for the Annual Teacher Preparation and Education Programs “Reading Winter Wonderland” to celebrate holidays around the world through literature. To make this event special for the children in the Riverside community, the programs are accepting new or like new book donations. It is located in Lovekin Field H-1 (next to the old tennis courts). Keeping in the Holiday spirit, this event will include storytelling, carollers, and of course, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. The event will be held Dec. 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The place will be on Riverside City College campus in the Bradshaw Hall of Fame (above the cafeteria).For more information, contact Annette Ramsey at 222-8927, or 328-3735.
RCC will soon let you learn Chinese for free
There will be a 4-week, online beginning Chinese class in January (5 hours a week) for qualified participants. This program is part of a doctoral thesis. For more information contact Edward Shih at 328-3763.
Bake sale fund raiser to be held in Dec.
On Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Math Department will be holding a bake sale for the Blaga Pauley Memorial Scholarship fund. All of the proceeds go to the RCC Foundation. There are several ways to participate in the event. You can donate homemade or store bought baked goodies such as cookies, brownies, cakes, breads, muffins, scones, etc. to my office (PS 201B) from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. You can also stop by and buy something between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Bookstore Promenade. Model United Nations wins again this year
The RCC MUN team participated in the American Model United Nations, held over the past four days in Chicago. The conference had 1,300 delegates and over 120 schools that participated in the event. RCC won Best Delegation and Outstanding Delegates on two of the five committees in which they participated.
RCC Dance Department presents Kinetic Conversations
Kinetic Conversations, an assortment of dance and movement featuring choreography by the renowned RCC dance faculty and guest artist Ramaa Bharadvaj, will be performed three times in the Landis Auditorium. General admission is $8, and $6 for students, staff, seniors, and children if purchased in advance. For tickets, call the Landis Box Office at (951) 222-8100. Dates and times are Dec. 1 at 8 p.m, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m and again on Dec. 2 at 8 p.m.
RCC offering a new course in Spring 2007
A new course which will be labeled Business Thematic Learning Project will be an instructional engagement for students to participate in intensive, thematic, semester-long projects in cultural, civic, profit and nonprofit organizations.
The Christmas Star playing in the Planetarium at RCC
The Planetarium will be hosting a special event, “The Christmas Star.”We’ll turn back time approximately 2,000 years to see what was going on in the skies on that first Christmas night. Dates are: Dec. 8 and 9 from 6:30-8 p.m., and then Dec. 15 and 16 from 6:30-8p.m.
The Pennington Dance Group will be performing at RCC
Collaborating with visual and performing artists, the Pennington Dance group creates and perform works that contain social, emotional, political, abstract and scientific themes that appeal to a wide audience on Jan. 2. For more information call, 222-8536.
Dancers should be prepared to sweat
Auditions for the Dance program at Cornish College of the Arts, a four-year performing arts university in Seattle, Washington on Jan. 15. ballet and modern styles will be evaluated for all RCC dancers who are looking towards transferring to a four-year college to study dance.
A new Pro Chef series is playing soon
The Riverside County Culinary Academy, a member of the American Culinary Federation, is presenting this “Pro Chef Series” with certified, award-winning chefs offering live demonstrations with cutting-edge topics and techniques. $40 per person – advance purchase; $45 at the door. The Elves and the Shoemaker comes to theatres
Based on the story by the Brothers Grimm adapted by Gayle Cornelison presented by Performance Riverside as part of the Children’s Series. Performed by the California Theatre Center back by popular demand. As performed by the internationally award-winning California Theatre Center, this production has been delighting children throughout the United States for 15 years. Offering for the youngest theater goers and their families, a chance to experience a refreshing show. Prepare to laugh when two merry elves arrive at the small village in the Black Forest and discover a poor, gentle shoemaker who clearly needs assistance. RCC Police safety tips for the holiday season
Once again the holiday season is upon RCC, RCC Police would like to advise how to stay safe during the season:
Maintain your personal space. Be alert when leaving stores or shopping malls. Do not use outside ATM’s (Mac machines) at night, or in unfamiliar surroundings. Avoid filling your arms with packages. Avoid stairwells in parking garages. When on the street, walk facing oncoming traffic. Approach any entryway with EXTREME caution when dark.
How to stay safe at work during the holiday season
RCC Police advise RCC faculty to secure their offices:Secure all work areas. Lock cabinets and drawers. Remove all personal items, i.e. laptop computers, handheld computers, etc. If you need to visit any of the campuses or plan on working during the holidays, please clear it with your Department Chairman or an administrator and inform college police in advance (24-hour dispatch – (951) 222-8171)
Automobile security need to be enforced this holiday season
RCC Police advise: ALWAYS have your keys out and ready before leaving a building to approach your car.Look around and in your car before getting in. Lock your car door immediately after entering your car. If you are in an accident, stay in your car until the police arrive. Check your surroundings before getting out of your car. Consider purchasing a cellular phone. Make it a practice of filling your car with gas when the gas tank is 1/2 empty. Lock your car and take the keys with you when you get out to pump gas. NEVER pick up hitchhikers. If you are accosted in a parking lot away from your car, consider rolling underneath a nearby automobile.
Corrections
In the Nov. 16, edition of Viewpoints, there was an error on page seven in the story about Wi-Fi coming to Riverside. The second paragraph refers to a deal that will allow anyone to access the Internet wirelessly.” The amount is actually $4 million.
