Mission Inn delights with lights

The 12th annual Festival of Lights ceremony on the evening of Nov. 26 was a hit with the men, women and children of Riverside as well as many tourists. “No matter how old you get, there’s still a little kid in you,” Roberts said, to the assembly. Thank goodness for evenings such as these that allow people to pause and experience the essence of the holiday season with those who mean most to them.

Rotella situated to pass Go

*News Analysis* Pieces are being moved in a game at Riverside Community College. A checkmate is just a few moves away. However, some are questioning the legitimacy of several moves. When the RCC District eventually splits into three separate colleges the top administrative position may be redefined, ushering in the chancellor of the RCCD. Salvatore Rotella, current president of RCC, has said that he believes that he will automatically assume the title.

Programs deliver more than news

Inland Valley News is RCC’s half hour broadcast news show that covers all of the Inland Empire. Approximately eight to 12 news stories air in the 30-minute time frame, which acts as a regular newscast. “There are a lot of people who don’t know what direction they’re headed in,” Tedesco said. “I know there are a lot of people that don’t know about this class…It leads to a lot of internships at radio and broadcast stations. If you are looking to get into the entertainment industry this is a good place to start.”

Adopt a soldier for the holidays

* Viewpoints Online exclusive * While most Americans will spend Christmas Eve nestled warm in their beds, 250,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will spend it alone in 130 countries throughout the world. Let’s face it, there’s a war going on out there and our country’s soldiers are putting their lives on the line in order for Americans to “sleep in heavenly peace.” Wouldn’t it be appropriate to show some respect and acknowledgement towards those courageous soldiers at a time when they need it the most?

Permits once again expired

Despite a promise made by former RCC Facilities Maintenance Manager Harold Lindner last year, elevator permits on campus are outdated. Section 7301 of the California Labor Code requires that an elevator can not be operated unless the permit remains in effect and is kept posted conspicuously in the elevator car.

Help with financial aid

* Viewpoints Online exclusive * Rent, insurance, gas, food, and on top of all that and more, rising college fees. It might seem enough to make any student go insane, not to mention broke. But it doesn’t have to be. Lack of finances should never get in the way of your education. So don’t let that be your excuse. And don’t wait. Fill out your applications now and you will be one step closer to your future.

Winter movies preview

The winter season is a time for gift giving, family gathering and a time off from school. Luckily, those who make movie have created a plethora of films to help spend all that free time and holiday cash. If these films exactly what you were wishing for this holiday season, here’s a few more in-depth looks at the a few best, and worst, movies to be expected.

Title IX helps athletes, hinders women coaches

Prior to Title IX’s passage in 1972 women coached 90 percent of women’s teams. In the past men’s and women’s physical education departments were seperate. Thus, women instructors were also the coaches for the women’s athletic teams. Women coaches need to reach out to other women through mentoring and by offering them assistant coaching positions. As Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success.”

We love RCC

Here at Viewpoints we are often criticized for portraying RCC negatively. This is perhaps an honest observation. We work hard at holding RCC to a higher standard because we expect great things from a college that has so much to offer its students. It is our responsibility to challenge the college administration to better the institution it serves. But it is easy in all the hoopla to forget what attracted us to RCC; to forget that the reason we work so hard is because there are things at the college worth working for. So in the spirit of this sentiment here are several positive attributes of RCC.
