Science and Nurse Complex coming to a school near you
In recent plans sent to the State Chancellor’s Office, the Riverside City College proposed the construction of a 130,000 square foot project that would be comprised of two linked building that will be used for science and nursing students looking to get an education in their fields. The buildings will be equipped with state of the art classrooms and laboratories and industry-standard resources.
New programs will be needed for student equity plans
The Student Equity Plan, which was developed by a representative committee of administrators, faculty, staff and students, recommended the construction of a program that will help African American students. The program titled Ujima provides academic preparation, support, and mentorship in the context of a culturally aware and supportive learning environment.
Fall semester brings more classes
Riverside City College is offering more classes this semester in hopes to increase the availability for students with a hectic schedule. There will be more short-term Fast Track classes and classes added on Fridays. Also, this will make it possible for students to complete courses for degrees, certificates and transfer.
Marching Tigers top competition
The “official band of the city of Riverside,” the RCC Marching Tigers continues it’s streak of winning awards and beating out all the competition. The band has competed in the Tournament of Roses, the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, and has made countless appearances in Hollywood films.
Nursing wins state grants to increase number of graduates
RCC’s associate degree Nursing Program was awarded three grants for the spring. Two were from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and one from the state through the governor’s Song Brown Program. The Chancellor’s Office awards will increase the number of students in the program. The Song Brown award will provide funds to hire two additional full-time nursing instructors.
RCC athlete’s rank high in regional and state competitions
The football, men’s and women’s basketball, the women’s cross country, and women’s water polo teams have risen to the top by reaching regional or state playoffs. The track team sent 12 athletes to the Southern California Regional Finals. In baseball, six RCC players were named to the 2006 All-Orange Empire Conference Team.
Program fosters hope for teens
One program at RCC that helps foster youth obtains skills they need by offering them a selection of programs at their disposal. The program services include student financial assistance, education counseling, and mentoring, with job skill training. The program is administered through the RCC Workforce Preparation Center which is sent to accomplish the college’s dual mission. This dual mission is community and economic development for young people in our communities.
Professor develops software for NASA
Associate Professor Mark Lehr and a team of RCC students are working on the new developmental project for NASA’s White Sands Rocket Testing Facility. The project software being developed will be used to help NASA engineers detect faculty rocket engines.
Renovation of the Quad
Work crews continue to renovate the A.G. Paul Quadrangle for its completion in late 2007. The crew is planning on restoring the wing, and to modernize the entire Quad. These new modernizations will include up-to-date air conditioning/heating/plumbing, completing seismic retrofitting, and equipping classrooms and offices with smart technology to enhance the teaching and learning process.
