In addition to welcoming back alumni and watching football, Homecoming is also a coronation ceremony.
On Oct. 25, the wait for Homecoming king and queen ended, and students from the Riverside Community College City campus and Moreno Valley campus were crowned.
The announcement of the Homecoming winners kicked off the half-time entertainment, which included a performance by the Riverside City College Marching Tigers, RCC Dancers and other groups.
The candidates from Riverside and Moreno Valley lined up beside the field dressed in formal suits and gowns for the announcement.
Walter Cisneros and April Getten were crowned RCC king and queen. Runners-up Sophie Noriega and Paul Barragan were crowned RCC princess and prince.
Diane Santillanes and Manuel Ventura were crowned as the Moreno Valley queen and king. Runners-up Adam Lopez and Monique Barrow were crowned Moreno Valley prince and princess.
Last year’s District king and queen, Chris Grant and Lauren Bishop, and last year’s RCC queen, Yajaira Tiscareno, presented the crowns to this year’s winners.
Though the festivities went without a hitch, the candidates from the Norco campus were nowhere to be found.
“Norco did not drop out last minute,” said Deborah Hall, Student Activities Coordinator at RCC. “They chose not to participate.”
Because one campus did not participate, adjustments had to be made to the competition.
“We chose to eliminate the ‘District competition’ due to Norco not being a part of it and to emphasize the campus winners,” said Hall.
As for the scholarship that would have been awarded to the District winners, it will be split between the four students that won campus king and queen, Hall said.
The official reasons for Norco’s decision to abstain from the ceremonies remain unknown, according to Danyelle Wilson, assistant coordinator for RCC Student Activities Office.
“We are really unsure why Norco did not participate,” Wilson said.
Telephone calls and e-mails to the Norco campus adviser have gone unreturned by the time of press.
