On March 15 the sun began to disappear under the horizon as students asked questions, which were answered by representatives from familiar universities during transfer night.
It was a cold, quiet, humble setting, which took place in front of the Riverside City College Bookstore. There were representatives from different universities handing out pamphlets, booklets and candy to students who were interested in learning more about the colleges and gaining information about tuition, majors offered and other opportunities the colleges had to offer.
Some of the colleges present were Cal Poly Pomona, La Sierra University, University of La Verne, Biola University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Redlands, Vangard University, Art Center College of Design, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Baptist University, Chapman University, Cal State Fullerton and the University of Phoenix.
If you ever notice signs on the side of the freeway that say University of Phoenix next right and you happen to see them often in different areas, it’s because the University of Phoenix is spread out all across the nation.
“We are the largest private college in the nation,” said the college’s representative Heather Sheehan. The University of Phoenix offers bachelor and master degrees through on line courses. Most students who attend the college major in human services, criminal justice, and business.
Cal Poly Pomona has a special partnership set up with different businesses. These businesses have representatives that attend job fairs that Cal Poly Pomona sets up for students so that students are given an opportunity to find internships. These job fairs also help students in furthering their careers by allowing them to make and keep contact with future employers.
Art Center College of Design has a great way for preparing their students for careers. When a student attends the college, they focus all four years on the career field they intend to go into.
“When you come into the Art Center you come right into your major,” said the representative for the college Jeff Williams.
At the Art Center College of Design there is no general education. The students build portfolios specific to the field of work they intend to go into. The curriculum projects the needs of the industry and because of this the college’s recent grads have high placement rates.
Another college that has high placement rates for recent grads is Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. This college offers degrees for those who want to work in aerospace and with airlines. There are also degrees offered to those who are in the military and people who work for large companies involved in aviation.
“There is a career service center that gets jobs from all around the country,” said the representative for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Arlene Doskocil.
These jobs are given to those who have degrees from Embry-Riddle.
There were many other colleges that were present at transfer night and if you want more information about these colleges or the colleges mentioned, then you can go to RCC’s Transfer Center, which is located in the Admissions Building.
